Let's Try This!

Sometimes I think that we, as humans, spend too much time looking for a complicated solution to problems.

My heart is breaking over the oil spill in the Gulf Coast. Siesta Key is my favorite beach, and I am crushed thinking that it may never be the same. I am not interested in pointing fingers, accusations, or demands. I just want the mess cleaned up as quickly as possible. I don't know how to do this, and the magnitude of the spill is nothing that I can imagine.

The other day, a friend showed me this video of two American Farmers who have developed a way to absorb oil from water using hayseed. The oil soaks into the hay quickly, and the hay can be easily scooped from the water. The hay can then be reused as a fuel in some capacity. Please take a look at this, and write the Department of Energy, your Congress, the DEP, the ASPCA... whoever you think need contacted in order to get a serious look at this!

Mitchell Langbert's Blog: Farmers Find Hayseed (Really) Solution to Oil Spill

After watching this video, I say that we give this method a try! Too often we overlook the simple solutions - but thankfully we have the Great American Farmer to look out for us. Here is a solution that does not require additional chemical clean-up, utilizes materials that are readily available to us, and does not create additional waste.

In closing, I want to point out that I am not against oil drilling. I know there are many who believe that we should leave it alone and not disturb the balance of nature. I thought for quite awhile on how to justify myself to this, and here is what I came up with:

Man searched out and found oil as a natural resource. It has created many opportunities and caused many tragedies. It has made life easier and harder at the same time. Man also searched and found fire. Fire has created many opportunities and caused many tragedies. Fire has made life easier and harder at the same time. Oil and fire as resources are necessities in daily life. So, here is my question: Why would one demand the cease of oil drilling without also asking for the banishment of fire?
